Be Pro-Housing Prepared for the November 2019 Election + Tell BayHAC About Your Local Housing Measures
This November, voters will head to the ballot for a variety of candidates and ballot measures. The HAC does not take positions on candidates but will be taking positions on ballot measures across the region. While the HAC has always put together a pro-housing voter guide in San Francisco, we want to make sure we support pro-housing legislation wherever it’s helpful, including regional and statewide efforts, and that’s where you come in.
Remembering Ron Miguel
San Francisco lost an extraordinary yet humble citizen activist with the passing of Ron Miguel on June 28. A former president of the San Francisco Planning Commission and former president of the Planning Association for the Richmond District, Ron was a long-time active member of SPUR and the founding chairman of the Housing Action Coalition (HAC). Ron was a loving husband, father of three, grandfather of seven and great-grandfather of four. We are sad to learn of his passing, and grateful for his devotion to the betterment of his birthplace.

Looking at the calendar, both the Senate and Assembly are in breaks until mid-July. At this point, all bills will have needed to be voted out of its house of origin and moved to the second house.
A Brief History of Institutional Racism in San Francisco’s Land Use Choices—and the Impacts that Remain Today
The events of recent weeks have forced a long overdue reckoning with systemic racism. The murders of George Floyd and Breonna Taylor have acutely and horrifically revealed the brutal treatment inflicted on Black Americans by the police, and remarkably, the outrage of this injustice has broken through, challenging us all to interrogate the institutions that have perpetuated and exacerbated institutional racism.

We gathered this information from elected officials and staff in respected cities/counties. Please note, that we have not independently verified any of the information.

PRESS RELEASE: BayHAC Announces Support of California YIMBY’s Charge to FPPC to Investigate Michael Weinstein’s 2019 Campaign Spending
The Bay Area Housing Advocacy Coalition announced today its support of California YIMBY’s formal complaint to the California Fair Political Practices Committee (FPPC) calling on them to investigate Michael Weinstein’s spending against SB 50 in last year’s election. Michael Weinstein and his organization, the Aids Healthcare Foundation, spent heavily to spread misinformation about Senate Bill 50, State Senator Scott Wiener’s beleaguered housing production legislation that advocates had hoped would help create desperately needed homes near transit all across the state, and the legal team at CAYIMBY say there’s ample evidence that Weinstein’s reporting practices were likewise dishonest.

SF Mayor London Breed to Introduce ‘Affordable Homes Now’; Charter Amendment Streamlines Housing Production
The mayor demonstrated her leadership on housing issues long before she entered office, but in the face of continued obstruction by a board of supervisors unwilling to work together and do their part to house the San Franciscans they’re obligated to under our shared values, the measure she announced this week amending the city charter to streamline the production of new housing backs her record up with real action.
