November 2024 Election Recap

As we close out 2024, the Housing Action Coalition 501(c)(4) is proud of the work we did for endorsed candidates around the state. In total, 71 of the 90 HAC-endorsed candidates were successful in their races this November. 4 of the 6 ballot measures we endorsed were also successful, including an important defeat for Proposition 33 (which is a victory for pro-housing).

In the Bay Area, we’re excited to work with the new Mayor of Berkeley, Adena Ishii, and the former Mayor turned Senator, Jesse Arreguin.

Oakland Councilmember Zac Unger knows the importance of building more housing while also maintaining important relationships and coalitions across the political spectrum.

Longtime friend of the organization Patrick Ahrens won his seat in the Assembly and will be a strong pro-housing voice in the South Bay. Wins in the City of San Mateo with Measure T help us note progress in previously difficult political situations.

We’re particularly excited to work with a new cohort of pro-housing members of the State Legislature from Southern California. State Senator Sasha Renee Perez joins three new members of the Assembly: Nick Schultz, Jessica Caloza, and John Harabedian will help us continue the progress we’ve made by bringing a new, fresh voice to the conversation. And having some leaders in Southern California will make a big difference. Coupled with Measure A’s passage in Los Angeles County, there is notable progress. Looking at local races in Southern California, we’re emboldened by-election results in Santa Monica, West Hollywood, and Culver City.

All in all, we frankly have mixed feelings about the results. Prop 5 was HAC’s top priority and it was unsuccessful. After that, we have a mostly positive record for our endorsements and feel good about the progress that can be made, especially in the State Capitol. As we know, elections are merely things that happen in our jobs. Regardless of the results, we’ll keep doing our part to push for more housing with the cards we’re dealt. We look forward to 2025 without a scheduled election and more progress in 2026 and beyond.
