While December is typically a slower holiday month, at HAC we’re busy accelerating our efforts.
Building on our success in 2021, during which we doubled the number of new homes we endorsed, tripled the number of pro-housing neighbors we activated, and celebrated our South Bay/Peninsula expansion, we’ve just launched two new initiatives to propel our pro-housing advocacy.
First, we’re launching a new political action committee – aptly named HAC PAC – to support pro-housing leaders across California. The severity of the Bay Area and California’s housing crisis are the result of failed leadership, and it’s long past time to change who’s in charge of housing decisions. The San Francisco Board of Supervisors’ egregious vote to block 495 new homes from being built atop Nordstrom’s valet parking lot, for example, is merely the latest in a long series of failures to alleviate our housing shortage, displacement, and affordability crisis, and we’re excited to support, elect, and re-elect leaders who will work intelligently and urgently to advance solutions.
Second, we’re expanding to Los Angeles County in response to repeated requests to bring our proven advocacy efforts to a region plagued by housing challenges and a dearth of strong leadership. With more than 60,000 people experiencing homelessness across the greater LA area, and a staggering shortage of homes for residents of all income levels, there’s a tremendous need for the strategic and persistent pro-housing organizing and advocacy that HAC knows how to deliver.
As we’ve steadily grown to a team of eight, and are poised to add two new LA staff members, I’m extremely proud of what we’ve accomplished together with our board, members, and partners in 2021 and excited for 2022!
