Take Action: Oppose Fees that Hurt New Housing

We believe new housing should do its fair share to help folks walk, bike and take transit. Residential developments will soon be required to pay a Transportation Sustainability Fee (TSF) introduced by the Planning Department and Municipal Transportation Agency (SFMTA). The proposed fee of $7.74 per square foot, calculated by City staff and a land-use economist, will contribute to transportation improvements in San Francisco. While expensive, the SF Housing Action Coalition (SFHAC) believes it is a fair way address our underfunded transportation systems and encourage housing near transit, and we support the TSF.

Some groups are urging the City to increase the fee dramatically. Their proposed rates would not only make building housing near transit much more expensive, it could make some residential development economically infeasible. This is the wrong thing to do when we should encourage more housing! The SFHAC does not support increased transportation sustainability fees and we need you to weigh in.

TAKE ACTION to support the City’s recommendation of $7.74 per square foot. Oppose fee increases that will hurt housing production.

Housing and transportation go hand-in-hand. But putting excessive burdens on badly-needed housing without considering its impact makes it harder to solve our worsening affordability crisis.
