HAC Leadership Transition Update

We’re excited to share the news that as of July 1st Todd David will be transitioning into a new role with HAC as senior advisor and special projects director, and
Corey Smith will become HAC’s new Executive Director!

Having served for the past seven-plus years as HAC’s Deputy Director, Corey has been essential to HAC’s growth and success as he’s led everything from running our day-to-day operations, to growing our organizing department, to driving our regional expansion, and infinitely more.

And with his deep housing expertise, extensive institutional knowledge, and far more stylish wardrobe, our team and Board of Directors are incredibly confident and enthusiastic about Corey taking the helm at this pivotal point in HAC’s trajectory.

As always, you’ll be able to find Todd at the HAC office yelling at politicians or holding afternoon meetings at his Valley Tavern office. Wherever he is, he’ll be spearheading HAC initiatives including the Affordable Homes Now November 8 ballot measure campaign, Los Angeles expansion, and other political priorities.

While Todd isn’t going anywhere, we do want to sincerely thank and congratulate him for his  outstanding leadership for his many years as HAC’s executive director.

When Todd joined the team in 2016, our organization was a three-person operation solely focused on San Francisco housing advocacy. Thanks to his bold leadership and tireless work, HAC has since:

  • Grown to our team to eight people and counting
  • Expanded our reach to serve the entire nine-county Bay Area
  • Launched our c4 political and legislative advocacy arm
  • Increased our influence in Sacramento by aggressively lobbying for and sponsoring pro-housing legislation
  • Helped elect state and local pro-housing candidates, and created the aptly-named HAC PAC to build and support a robust pipeline of pro-housing leaders.

Ever humble, Todd would be the last person to take credit for HAC’s exponential growth but it’s undeniable that the unique strengths, experience, and vision he brought to HAC have enabled our small but mighty team to have an outsized impact across our region and state.

Just as important, Todd has also been an unfailingly supportive mentor and all-around excellent boss type whose longstanding management philosophy is “hire people smarter than you and give them everything they need to succeed.”

Thank you Todd – for giving so much to all of us, and to HAC. Onward!
