Celebrating the Passage of the Serramonte Del Rey Development in Daly City

On February 26th, Daly City City Council voted to approve Jefferson Union High School District’s (JUHSD) proposal to introduce 1,235 new homes and a Head Start child care facility at the Serramonte Del Rey site.

The project’s approval was long awaited, with three years of collaboration, negotiation, and compromise between the Jefferson Union High School District, the NorCal Carpenters union, and Daly City staff. Despite the challenges, the Serramonte Del Rey project will significantly benefit our community and prove instrumental in helping Daly City meet its Regional Housing Needs Allocation (RHNA).

The Housing Action Coalition was proud to endorse the project back in 2021. We were impressed with the plan’s commitment to affordable housing. 20% of the housing units will be  affordable, with 13% of those units earmarked for 23%-65% Area Median Income (AMI), offering extremely affordable options.

Additionally, to address the growing childcare crisis, JUHSD incorporated a new Head Start facility on the Serramonte site that will offer high-quality, low-cost childcare to community members. This will serve as an invaluable resource for Peninsula families in need of affordable childcare.

Finally, we were thrilled to support a project alongside our friends at the Housing Leadership Council of San Mateo, that has committed to utilizing union labor. We understand the financial implications a project has to undergo to meet labor standards can sometimes pose a challenge to developers. However, when a project can be built with union labor, it gets done faster and safer, and provides good jobs for these workers – a win-win that will benefit our community.
